PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
A daily medication (Truvada or Descovy) that, when taken consistently, reduces the risk of HIV infection by about 99%.
- Requires prescription and regular monitoring
- Must be taken daily to be effective
- Does NOT protect against other STIs
- Increasingly common among lifestyle participants
- Many insurance plans and programs cover it
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
Emergency medication taken after potential HIV exposure.
- Must be started within 72 hours of exposure (sooner is better)
- 28-day course of antiretroviral medication
- Available at emergency rooms and some clinics
- For emergencies only, not regular prevention
Vaccinations
HPV Vaccine
Protects against strains that cause most cervical cancers and genital warts. Recommended up to age 45. Even if you've been exposed to some strains, the vaccine can protect against others.
Hepatitis A & B Vaccines
Highly effective vaccines. Hepatitis B is sexually transmitted. Both are recommended for sexually active adults. If you weren't vaccinated as a child, you can get them as an adult.
