Managing Nerves & Anxiety
Coping with the anxiety that comes with new lifestyle experiences.
Points clés
- •Nerves are completely normal and expected
- •Preparation helps reduce anxiety
- •It's okay to take things slower than planned
- •Talk to your partner about how you're feeling
Normalizing Nervousness
If you're nervous before your first experience, congratulations—you're normal. Even experienced lifestyle participants get nervous before meeting new people. The key isn't eliminating nerves but managing them so they don't overwhelm you.
Before the Experience
- Have detailed conversations with your partner about expectations
- Know exactly what you've agreed is okay and not okay
- Establish clear signals for checking in or stopping
- Plan logistics so you're not stressed about details
- Get enough sleep the night before
- Don't use alcohol as a crutch (a drink is fine; getting drunk isn't)
In the Moment
Breathe
If you feel anxiety rising, take slow, deep breaths. Excuse yourself briefly if needed. A bathroom break to collect yourself is perfectly fine.
Slow Down
You can always go slower than planned. If full swap feels like too much, do soft swap. If any play feels like too much, just socialize. There's always next time.
Communicate
Tell your partner how you're feeling. A quick "I'm a bit nervous" opens the door for support. They're probably feeling similar things.
If Anxiety Becomes Overwhelming
If you find yourself having a panic attack or severe anxiety, it's okay to stop everything. Tell your partner you need to leave or take a break. Your mental health comes first. You can try again another time when you feel more ready.
Helpful Mindset
Remember: everyone wants the experience to be positive. The other couple or person wants you to be comfortable. If you need to slow down or stop, they will understand. Experienced lifestyle people know that first times can be overwhelming.
