STI Testing Basics
Why regular testing matters and how to establish a testing routine.
Kurz gesagt
Regular STI testing is a shared community responsibility in the lifestyle. A common standard is testing every 3-6 months when sexually active with multiple partners, and because many STIs are asymptomatic, testing shows responsibility rather than an assumption of risk.

Why Testing Matters
In the lifestyle, you're part of an interconnected community. Regular testing isn't just about protecting yourself—it's about protecting everyone you interact with. Many STIs are asymptomatic, meaning you can have and transmit them without knowing.
How Often to Test
Every 3 Months
Recommended if you're actively playing with multiple partners regularly. This is the standard many lifestyle couples follow.
Every 6 Months
Acceptable for less frequent activity or if you have a smaller, trusted group of partners.
Before New Partners
Some people test before establishing new ongoing connections. This is especially common before fluid bonding (sex without barriers).
What to Test For
A comprehensive panel should include:
- HIV (antibody and RNA for recent exposure)
- Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2)
- Syphilis
- Chlamydia (urogenital, oral, and rectal if relevant)
- Gonorrhea (urogenital, oral, and rectal if relevant)
- Hepatitis B and C
- HPV (for those with cervixes, via Pap smear)
Be explicit with your provider about what you want tested. "Full STI panel" doesn't always include everything.
Window Periods
Different STIs have different window periods—the time between exposure and when a test can detect it. HIV can take up to 45 days. Syphilis up to 90 days. A negative test doesn't mean you're clear if you were exposed recently.
