Having been in the lifestyle for a while now, here’s some experiences we’ve had.
Parties with unrestricted access to single males: we attended a party with a ratio of 10 men to each woman, that was not a gang-bang. And only 3-4 of the women were willing to play (Mrs being one of them). It was not as fun and lots of people decided to leave after an hour or so.
Parties with screened single men. These are usually better. These guys usually understand the expectations and are respectful. That being said some “coupled” men have gotten overly aggressive and have been asked to leave. Still these are generally much better, with folks much more relaxed and having a great time. The ladies feel more free to do as they like without feeling like they’ll be swarmed by dicks like they’re in a bukkake film.
Clubs with lots of single men. First, when we arrived there were LOTS of men waiting to get in. Then when we got in, lots of dudes were all over Mrs. She does like the attention, but can get overwhelmed. When she did select a nice, respectful guy to take for some fun, we went to a play room and got undressed, then he let in 3 more dudes. Presumably he had an agreement to let his buddies in, and had not asked Mrs. if that would be okay. We told them to get out, all of them. Had to get staff to assist and escort them out. Never went back. And we’ve been cautious about venues with lots of loose dicks ever since.
So it’s not usually anything about any single man in particular, but experience has shown us, and many in the lifestyle, that having lots of loose dicks about can at best put a damper on a party, and at worst generate lots of drama. And this is why we don’t attend events with lots of single men and very few of any other demographic.

Poly-Swingers - Moving beyond FWB relationship - We were in a poly relationship for over 7 years and was the greatest experience we have ever had. Unfortuately the male of the couple passed away a couple of years ago. We had a great relationship we went everywhere together and done everything together. We was actually very much in love with them and they with us. It is hard to find the right couple that you can get that close with but is possible. So now we are looking again. But the part of the ploy relationship was that we still love one another very much also.

Discretion, the better part of valor - I love that saying - It's a tough one. Women will ALWAYS get more action here than men. Sex is theirs when it comes to power and control. The "you can only get as much as I can get" has never worked for us. But our situation is a little different in that I travel a ton for work so when I'm home I can't see spending what little time I have with someone else. And being on the road, I don't have time to get any action. So the equality in playing separate isn't there. As a result, Mrs. Sexperimentor doesn't play without me unless it's another woman. That's her choice and a bone thrown to equality, which I appreciate.
As for the issue of not playing because you're afraid you'll run into a playmate in your vanilla life... To me that's horse pucky. The person you run into will be at just as much risk as you of being "outed". You'll have a lot more in common than a whole lot of other people you meet. And if you have a little discretion about who you play with, you'll have similar attitudes on how to conduct yourselves in a vanilla situation. Actually, I don't think we have EVER, in all the years we've been doing this, just run into anyone we've played with. There are people we've known to be swingers but haven't played with that we've run into, one lady I run into frequently, but life in the lifestyle has never even been discussed in vanilla settings.
I hope this isn't your situation, but the last couple I knew that would play separately but not together, with a story told essentially the same way you told yours, didn't end well. She was more interested in having other romantic relationships than she was in maintaining her marriage. Frankly, while playing without my wife is fun, and we share the tales and details afterward, I'd really rather play as a couple. Our playing together has enhanced our relationship and that's what I'd encourage you to do.
