I'm with Highway on this one...there are plenty of ways to kill oneself.
There are plenty of things the general "law-abiding" public does in their cars and homes that put themselves and others in danger.
Have to wonder which demographic group will be next after having ridded our communities of the dregs of society by outlawing tobacco and alcohol (the insidious pot-heads have already been dealt with after all)?
How about the fat people? They live an unhealthy lifestyle, and certainly provide a burden on society with obesity related issues. Attribute the rise in Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, increase in cancer (yes cancer...in individuals who have never smoked and have otherwise lived a good "christian" life) to the convenient and unhealthy lifestyles full of decadence and complacency we lead (Hmm...I know there was a reference to the Roman empire somewhere earlier in this thread).
Once the fat peeps are incarcerated...who shall shoulder the burden and blame for many of the ills in our society?
There are always going to be special interest target groups in our society, whether they be pot-heads, crack-heads, fatties, adrenaline junkies, speeders, cell-phoning-while-driving idiots, swingers...well you get the point.
We may forget to look at WHY things are made illegal, maybe that's on purpose...because when you think about it...the reasons for WHY they are do not make sense. It couldn't be merely for personal safety and health reasons...because if that were the case, then certainly excessive food, and cell phones would be made illegal.
I'm with TR on the too much government intrusion scene; We are the so-called "most free" country on the planet...yet we have the most laws and government intrusion and incarcerated percentage of the population.

Also the bit about swingers being in a high risk category specifically notes an average age of 45+ and of course I'm not saying that isn't applicable to some here, but come on! No wonder you didn't include links to your research...

Looks like you have been reading and you did run across the Dutch research study. 2010 and 2009 here at home are in many cases the most recent data depending on what you are looking for and where you are looking. Compare those statistics with earlier studies and you get an idea of increases in risk. Data analysis is far more tedious and boring than the forums post I offer on this subject. It was not so simple for us as to just read a few articles. It is possible that the risk has gone down. I sincerely, hope that is true and we are overestimating the risk. Perhaps more people are self identifying as swingers and so more people with positive test are being included in the data as swingers. What I do not see is any real attempt at systematic education or intervention. Nothing that would suggest a reason for improvement within the community.
If swingers do not, as a group, come out of the closet as far as their healthcare providers and organizations that monitor such things like the CDC are concerned and allow for data compilation sufficient for real numbers analysis we may never really know what we are or not dealing with. It is evident that the number of people in the swinging lifestyle using technology to at least try and hook up is far greater than the numbers self identifying as swingers in clinical observation and testing. Maybe the percentages of people getting tested right here in Utah that self identify as swingers that are testing positive is much higher than the percentage within the broader swingers community that are positive?
Technology makes hooking up so much easier and it make for lack of a better term marketing the potential rewards within the lifestyle experience so much more available as well. Should technology not afford an opportunity or a forum, for the consideration of potential solutions to a problem we all recognize exist to some degree? Lets say I am an alarmist. Would not most of you like to know the real story? Well, really knowing the real story is only possible if the whole community gets tested. Knowing your own personal STD story is only possible through testing as well.
Is it perhaps possible that education and full battery testing just might be made more affordable and convenient and still remain anonymous if the community was willing to seek it out? As far as infectious disease is concern the CDC is really not judgmental. No community is an island and all communities have some effect on all the rest.
patriot or not - pledge - I've been reading, with some interest, the pontifications and protestations on the issues of this post. Some talk about morals some about duty some about apothy of people. I 'll ask: What is worals? Are swingers moral if society finds it averant? Is this country based on good Christian principals? Is this current government or administration trying to turn this country into a theocracy? This ccountry was founded so that everyone should have the right to live their life in their own manner, to be free to pursue whatever they wish so long as it does not interfere with others rights and liberties, and to be happy in those rights.
As for religion, here I go again quoting the father of our constitution, Thomas Jefferson said; "I have recently been examining all known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology."
God's be damned, government be damned as well and if we do nothing to oppose bad government we are not patriotic, we are fools who will watch our country drown in it's own bile.. We can talk forever about what is and is not good but until we live what is good and moral, (morality is that principle which basically says "do no harm" like the doctors pledge) but until we apply true morality to our own lives and speak boldly to government which rules in fear and demogogery and to business which thinks that God is a dollar or a yen or any other form of currency, we will be be responsible for our own plight....
Just a thought or two... Since we do not study history or at least it's tennons we will be forced to repeat the mistakes made before....
